How to Get Rid of Jowls
Nearly everyone will develop jowls at some point as they get older. This common cosmetic concern is characterized by sagging skin below the chin and jawline. Jowls are typically caused by the skin becoming thinner and more lax with age. Certain factors can make them worse in some individuals, such as genetics, environmental factors like sun exposure, or lifestyle habits like smoking.
For mild to moderate jowls, non-surgical treatments may help reduce their sagging appearance. Exercises are usually not an effective method of treating jowls, since the muscles are not the culprit. Depending on the individual, options like laser therapy or dermal fillers may be recommended. Laser resurfacing can help stimulate collagen production and tighten skin, while facial fillers can fill in the area around the jowls to make them appear less droopy.
If a patient has more severe jowls, a facelift and/or neck lift procedure may be the most beneficial solution. Facelift and neck lift surgeries can specifically address this area along the jawline, removing excess tissue and tightening the remaining skin for a more youthful facial appearance.
